Jay Bartow
Jay Bartow is a native Californian. Born in 1945 in Ventura, California, he grew up in the San Fernando Valley, and attended UCLA where he earned a B.A. in International Relations. He then attended Fuller Theological Seminary, earning a Master of Divinity Degree. His first call was to Lakewood First Presbyterian Church in Long Beach (now called Grace First Presbyterian Church), as an associate pastor
In 1974 he was called as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Monterey, California. He served that church for thirty-six happy years. During that time he earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary. His Dissertation project was titled: "Sin and Redemption in the Novels of Frederick Buechner and Walker Percy." He retired in June of 2011 and continued to live in Monterey with his wife of fifty-five years, Gail, a Mathematics Instructor at Monterey Peninsula college.
In retirement he went on several trips with teams to work alongside churches in Guatemala and Cuba installing water purification systems for communities without potable water. Being fluent in Spanish was a real asset on these trips
He and his wife have two adult children and four grandchildren ranging in age from seven to twenty-three years. His autobiography has recently been published.
