Water Projects I have worked on
In my retirement I have enjoyed working with teams from Living Water World Missions on water purification projects in Guatemala and Cuba. The process is very well thought out. It begins with a water assesment. Is the water potable in that community? We test it. If it is not potable, we ask the members of the church or school in the area if they would like to provide potable water to their community at a very modest cost, far below what they would pay to buy bottled water. If they say Yes, we enter into a covenant with them. They are responsible for providing a room suitable for the water purification system and for purchasing the tanks for the system and pvc pipes. They also agree to provide volunteers to help build and run the system, and also volunteer teachers to teach proper hygiene.
Living Water World Missions will provide the filters, pumps, gauges, valves and connectors and know how to build the system. Living Water World Missions will also provide the instructors to teach educators in the community about proper hygiene. Living Water will provide filters for the first two years and troubleshooting with in-country staff, when needed. All of the seventy plus systems they have built over the last ten years are still up and running.

This non-profit is extremely efficient and well run with minimal overhead and lots of volunteers. It is based in Visalia, California, and its President and CEO, Mark Vanciel, is one of my heroes. You may want to go as a volunteer on one of their trips, or just to provide financial support.
